70 APPLICATIONS for the Enhanced Defective Concrete Blocks Grant Scheme have been registered with Limerick City and County Council since the scheme began in July 2023.
This scheme aims to assist homeowners in Donegal, Mayo, Clare, and Limerick whose dwellings have been damaged due to the use of defective concrete blocks in construction.
Documents have been received by the Council from 47 of the 70 registered applicants. All 38 that have been subject to the scheme’s validation process to date have met the damage threshold.
The Housing Agency has made decisions on remediation options for 21 of the Limerick applicants. 18 so far have been approved for grant support and three have been refused.
Refusals are based on accredited laboratory results which deem that defective blocks are not the cause of the dwelling damage, however an appeals process is available for those who have been rejected under the scheme.
In the third quarter of 2024, the Housing Agency started core testing on 16 homes in Limerick where the damage threshold was met. This testing is crucial to determine the extent of the damage and the appropriate remediation measures if any.
Looking ahead, the Social Housing Defective Concrete Blocks Grant Scheme is set to open in 2025, further expanding support to affected homeowners.
