Limerick people named second most generous in Ireland

Almost €250,000 was raised to support Carol Liston O'Connor and her family.

LIMERICK people are among the most generous in Ireland. That’s according to the results of a survey of charitable and community causes helped in 2024 on the GoFundMe crowdfunding platform.

Limerick donations came second only to funds raised in Galway, with people across the county contributing significantly to the nearly €50 million raised nationwide across 2024.

The Treaty’s remarkable generosity supported a wide array of causes, from rebuilding homes after devastating fires to funding critical medical treatments for children.

In addition, Ireland has been crowned the most generous country in the world, according to GoFundMe’s official 2024 ‘Year in Help’ report.

Thanks to the Shannonside generosity, almost €250,000 was raised for the Liston O’Connor family in Athea, after mother of five Carol Liston O’Connor was diagnosed with motor neurone disease.

Over €60,000 was raised to help support the care costs of Kevin Ryan of Kilmore, Broadford, who experienced kidney failure and was left unable to work and with significant care needs.

€75,000 has been raised so far for the Walsh family of Glenbrohane and Knocklong, who were unable to meet mortgage repayments after the matriarch of the family – Betsy Walsh – was diagnosed as terminally ill.

More than €50,000 has been raised in the name of Noah Twomey, who was tragically diagnosed with leukaemia aged just seven years old. The funds raised go towards helping the family with medical costs and day-to-day needs as parents Robert and Linda Twomey look after Noah and his brothers Ryan and Ruairí.

Ireland’s top five generous counties were Galway, Limerick, Cork, Waterford, and Dublin.

Speaking on Ireland’s continued global leadership in generosity, GoFundMe CEO Tim Cadogan said: “The Irish people’s incredible kindness and willingness to help others, even during challenging times, continues to inspire.”

“Whether donating €5 or €500, every act of generosity creates a ripple effect of hope and change. This year’s inspiring fundraisers are a testament to the Irish spirit – resilient, compassionate, and unwavering in its support of those in need.”

The crowdfunding platform revealed that almost €50million was raised for countless life-changing causes across Ireland this year.

From charity funding to supporting families in crisis, the nation’s spirit of giving has never been more evident.

In 2024, more than 15,000 fundraisers were launched across Ireland, with more than 850,000 donations. Globally, an average of two donations were made every second.
