Council quizzed on “disproportionate purchases of new builds by AHBs”

ANSWERS have been requested from the Council in relation to plans it might have to curtail the “completely disproportionate purchasing of new build houses in Limerick City by Approved Housing Bodies (AHBs) and other entities supported by the State”.

Responding to Cllr Catherine Slattery (FF) at the May Metropolitan District meeting, the local authority acknowledged the findings of a recent Limerick Chamber report which identified that 57 per cent of residential property purchases in Limerick in 2023 were made by non-household entities for all tenures — private and affordable, not just social housing.

“We note, however, that this figure has reduced substantially to 32.4 per cent in 2024 — well below the national average of 36.5 per cent in the same year,” the Council informed Cllr Slattery.
