Plans for multi-storey apartment block at Limerick’s landmark Opera site

A PLANNING application has been submitted to redevelop a vacant site with over 20 new apartment units in the heart of Limerick City, which will become part of one of the most aspirational developments in the Treaty City in generations.

Architecture firm Healy Partners have joined up with developers HKD Limited to seek planning permission for the construction of a multi-storey building comprising of 22 apartments in the landmark Limerick Opera development.

The seven-storey building would comprise of a 16 one-bedroom apartments and six two-bed apartments, as well as a communal area for residents and commercial space located on the ground floor.

The demolition of a vacant garage on Michael Street is also included as part of the plans.

Developers say the new housing plans will “transform a vacant brownfield site on Michael Street into a vibrant contemporary addition to Limerick city centre”.

The news comes following the announcement of plans to construct 285 apartments on the Dock Road, which was confirmed by the Land Development Agency (LDA) last week.

The proposed development of one, two, and three-bedroom apartments will be located at the Limerick Gasworks Site on the Dock Road, subject to planning permission.

It is also proposed that the development, across three apartment blocks, would incorporate a public plaza, crรจche, play areas, green open areas, and retail units.

The homes are to be developed on land being acquired by the LDA from Gas Networks Ireland (GNI).

The proposed development will include 142 one-bed, 127 two-bed, and 16 three-bed apartments across three blocks ranging from one to eight storeys.

It was also announced last month that work will soon begin on a new 14-storey office building at Limerick’s landmark Opera Square development for the Revenue Commissioners staff.

At the July meeting of Limerick City and County Council, the elected members passed a Section 183 resolution to sell lands at the Opera Square site to the Office of Public Works.

The land sale, which includes a 999-year lease, will allow the Office of Public Works to move forward with the construction of a landmark building that will be home to almost 1,000 workers.

The development of the Opera site by Limerick Twenty Thirty DAC has been supported over the last number of years by the elected members of Limerick City and County Council.
