A BELOVED Limerick City store has announced it will close the doors of Silke One-Stop Art and Stationary on Catherine Street for the final time this Christmas Eve.

The shop, regarded as one of the most successful stationary stores in the Mid West, has been in business for more than 30 years providing arts and crafts supplies and stationary for artists, schools, and generations of families.

Owners and management are now set to retire following the retirement of shop manager Jane O’Mahony in recent months.

Speaking to the Limerick Post, proprietor Owen Silke says he is grateful to customers for their support over the years.

“It has been a fantastic journey. People in Limerick, the Mid West, and all over the country have been incredibly loyal. We are answering emails from customers wishing me the best at the minute,” he said.

“I feel slightly guilty to some of our loyal customers, but I had to make a decision and it’s very nice to be able to go on your own terms.”

Mr Silke also serves as a member of the Limerick City Centre Traders Association and says that while it’s not the reason for his shop’s closure, trading in the city has become more challenging for businesses.

“Without a doubt, trading in the city has become more difficult. It’s compounded by the online marketplace, as we all know,” he said.

“I just want to to say a big thank you to all my customers and staff. They have been fantastic and so loyal over the years and just made the whole experience so pleasant. We have loved doing business in Limerick and have enjoyed every minute.”

The shop will close temporarily from November 15, before reopening for a final clearance sale on Thursday next (November 20).
