UISCE Éireann is set to begin on a major infrastructure project to upgrade the wastewater network in Hospital, County Limerick, delivering a new treatment plant, representing a €21.5million investment in the area.
This upgrade will significantly enhance the capacity of existing wastewater treatment facilities, protect the local environment by improving water quality in the River Mahore, and ensure the town can expand into the future with confidence.
By delivering a modern treatment plant and supporting infrastructure with capacity for more than double the current population, this significant increase will enable planned housing and business development, strengthen essential services, and position Hospital to thrive for decades to come.
Minister for Housing, Local Government, and Heritage, James Browne deemed the commencement of the project as very welcome news for the community.
“Investment in wastewater infrastructure that provides additional capacity will bring tangible benefits by supporting the existing population and the delivery of new homes and local growth,” he said.
The works also involve upsizing incoming sewers, removing existing stormwater overflows, and building a new stormwater storage system. A new outfall will discharge treated effluent to the River Mahore, while sustainable sludge drying reed beds will reduce energy use and transport movements. Ground-mounted solar panels will also be installed.
The project is being delivered by Glanua Ireland on behalf of Uisce Éireann with completion expected in 2028.
Construction will mainly take place around the existing treatment plant, behind Herbertstown GAA grounds. Residents may notice increased construction traffic during the works.
