The incident happened at Knocknamana, Clarecastle last night (Wednesday, January 14) at around 10 pm leaving a large hole in the bridge wall.
Emergency services, including units of Clare County Fire and Rescue and Gardaà attended the scene. Engineering crews from Iarnród Éireann were also called to the scene.
No injuries have been reported, according to GardaÃ, and investigations are ongoing.
Iarnród Éireann have since updated customers on their X, formerly Twitter, page that services between Ennis and Limerick are back and operating as normal. The bridge has also been cleared and is now safe for traffic.
Train services were suspended this morning between Ennis and Limerick, and the L4116 local road at Knocknamana closed off to traffic.
Iarnród Éireann confirmed that services were suspended following the incident, and that staff were “working to reopen the line as soon as possible.”
The incident also led to some delays between Galway and Ennis on the Western rail corridor.
