LIMERICK’S Paul Foley (Patrickswell) was elected unopposed as treasurer of the Munster GAA Council at its convention in Fitzgerald’s Woodlands House Hotel, Adare.

In assuming the role, he follows in the footsteps of fellow Limerick men Ailbe Quillinan (Commercials, 1913-’27), Willie Hough (Monagea, 1936 – ‘68), Declan Moylan (Claughaun, 1991 – ‘01) and Michael Fitzgerald (Kilmallock, 2011 – ‘14).

Foley succeeds Cork’s Bob Ryan who stood down after the mandatory three years in any one position on the Council.

He previously served in a couple of roles with Limerick, namely as Munster/Central Council delegate.

As a player, Foley captured eight county senior hurling championship medals and was full-back and captain of the 1993 winning team.

Munster GAA had a turnover of €12.6million last year, a large proportion of which was accounted for through gate receipts from the Munster Senior Hurling Championships.

It returns most of the profits to counties/clubs through various grants.

Eamonn Phelan (St Patrick’s) was unsucessful in his attempt to assume the role of provincial PRO, beaten to the job by Richard Tobin of Waterford.

Tim Murphy of Kerry continues as Munster chairman.
