LIMERICK Choral Union (LCU) will take to the stage of University Concert Hall this week for its eagerly anticipated spring concert, Awakening, a programme of choral music centred on the themes of renewal, hope and new beginnings.

The concert takes place on Saturday April 18 at 8pm, under the baton of Musical Director Malcolm Green. Choir and orchestra will be joined by two distinguished soloists — mezzo-soprano Gemma Ní Bhriain and soprano Sarah Shine — for an evening that promises to be among the highlights of Limerick’s cultural calendar in 2026.

The programme brings together two contrasting yet complementary works. Dan Forrest’s Requiem for the Living offers a deeply moving journey from darkness into light, speaking not to the dead but to those who remain — a meditation on resilience, comfort and peace. Rather than dwelling solely in mourning, Forrest’s work breathes fresh life into the familiar Requiem text, guiding listeners towards stillness and hope.

The second half of the evening turns outward and upward with Antonio Vivaldi’s beloved Gloria, a work of radiant energy and confident praise. Among the most celebrated pieces in the choral repertoire, Vivaldi’s Gloria radiates joy, vitality and the exuberance of life renewed — a fitting counterpart to the quiet introspection of the Forrest.

Together, the two works trace an emotional arc well suited to the spirit of spring: from reflection and healing towards celebration and light.

Limerick Choral Union has long been regarded as one of Ireland’s leading amateur choral societies, with a tradition of presenting music of the highest standard to audiences in Limerick and beyond. Saturday’s concert continues that tradition, with the combined forces of choir, orchestra and two exceptional soloists under the experienced direction of Malcolm Green.
