THE spotlight is on the business end of the All-Ireland League this Saturday, with action in various promotion/relegation play-off semi-finals.
One of the high profile fixtures is Shannon home to Dungannon at Thomond Park, kick-off 2.30pm.
Also with home advantage are Old Crescent and UL Bohemian, against Sligo and Clogher Valley, respectively.
It’s an interesting period for clubs, and it would be great to have Garryowen back in the top-flight next season.
Meanwhile, there has certainly been some wonderful rugby entertainment on offer to TV viewers at the weekend, with a selection of cracking ties across the Champions and Challenge Cup compeititions. What a pity that Munster were not involved!
It has been a hard season for the Reds and their fans, and the imminent departure of both Thaakir Abraahams and Jean Kleyn presents the coaching ticket with another couple of problems
Short-term cover Michael Ala’alatoa is also another set to leave the club.
Senior coach Mike Prendergast’s departure has added to Clayton McMillan’s burden, with Roger Randle (a former Chiefs Assistant Coach under McMillan) linked to this vacancy. New signings appear to be Jack Aungier from Connacht and Springbok Marnus van der Merwe.
On the pitch, Munster’s season is hanging by a thread, and the immediate task is a tricky away outing to Benetton on Saturday (7.45pm).
Stated captain Tadhg Beirne: “We still have an opportunity of a trophy (URC) at the end of this season. It may look like a long, long way to a lot of people but we have to focus on this next game first.”
Also, after over 250 outing with Munster, John Ryan (37) has confirmed his retirment.
“It has been a dream to represent Munster for so many years,” he said. “I will forever be grateful to have worn the Munster jersey.”
Said McMillan: “John and his family can take great pride in all he has achieved on the field.”
