BED bugs formed the basis of an award received by a Limerick student for her unique design.
Sophie Keane from Desmond College in Newcastle West was crowned winner of the Best Innovation Award 2026 at the Foróige NFTE National Final in Croke Park last week.
The device is designed to attract and trap bed bugs by mimicking human characteristics such as warmth and heartbeat.
Other finalists from Limerick included Tomas O’Sullivan from Coláiste Chiaráin for his automated bat monitoring system supporting wildlife conservation and environmental monitoring, Miles Bueno and Sarah Hurley also from the Croom secondary school for their app, Power Predict, designed to forecast potential power outages using location-specific predictions.
