A MAN with almost 100 previous convictions was sentenced to one month in prison after stealing nearly €30 worth of washing powder from a Limerick store.

26-year-old Martin O’Reilly with an address at Kilmurry View, Castletroy, appeared before Limerick District Court in connection with the theft, which took place at Mr Price on Roxboro Road last October.

The court heard that Mr O’Reilly stole washing detergent valued at €29.89 before leaving the store without paying.

CCTV footage later identified him leaving the store without paying for the detergent.

Mr O’Reilly has 97 previous convictions, including for violent disorder, theft, public order offences, criminal damage, production of an article, failure to appear and as well as a number of road traffic incidents.

His solicitor Sarah Ryan told the court that he is already serving a three-month prison sentence in relation to the theft offences, along with a six-month sentence for criminal damage. He is not expected to be released until February next year.

The accused pleaded guilty to the theft of the washing powder and Ms Ryan asked the court to take this into account during sentencing.

Judge Catherine Ryan acknowledged the guilty plea but noted the seriousness of the accused’s lengthy criminal record. She sentenced Mr O’Reilly to one month in prison, with the sentence to run concurrently with the sentences he is already serving.
