FIANNA Fáil councillor Catherine Slattery has called for a green area between car parking spaces at Glasgow Park to be removed in light of the fact that over 70 of 100 residents have signed a petition.

Speaking at the Metropolitan District meeting for the month of May, Cllr Slattery told the Council executive that this was her third time bringing the motion forward. She pointed out that she was advised to carry out a plebiscite to gage the support of residents for this move.

“The reason I didn’t get signatures from every house was because they might not have been home, or whatever the case was, on the night of the Friday evening. I sent those signatures in by email on the ninth of April. We’re now on the 18th of May, and they haven’t even been acknowledged.

“This is a complete waste of  a motion, and because I was getting no answers, I was forced to put in another motion,” Cllr Slattery explained.

Fine Gael councillor Sarah Kiely seconded the motion and said that residents made their feelings well known on the removal of the green area in Glasgow Park. She deemed the Council’s handling of the matter as “very disappointing”.

Social Democrats councillor Shane Hickey-O’Mara also showed his “solidarity” with Cllr Slattery on her proposal, describing the slow response from the Council as very frustrating.

In response, the Council said that a review of the car parking provision within the estate is currently ongoing, adding:

“This assessment is being carried out in accordance with the car parking standards as set out in the Limerick City and County Council Development Plan 2022 to 2028. An update will be provided when
the assessment/review is complete.”

Cllr Slattery said this reply was not acceptable as she had already received it twice previously.

“This is not an area where we’re removing spaces, it’s a car parking spot that’s overgrown in between the car parking spaces. If you’re familiar with Glasgow Park, you can’t put a car into the outside of the house because the gardens are too small, so they have car parking spaces outside the houses, which aren’t maintained and have little green dividers between each car parking space. It’s not looked after and there’s rat holes.

“I’m just sick of it now, and so are the residents. As I said, there’s plenty of green space up there in front of these houses. There’s a massive green area for children to play in, for the community to congregate. These small green dividers between the car parking spaces don’t need to be there, it’s not a big deal. Get them out,” the City East representative insisted.
