Classics told differently by Irish Chamber Orchestra (ICO)

What happens when a concert feels less like a list of pieces and more like a story? That’s the idea behind French Reverie, as Irish Chamber Orchestra (ICO) teams up with Artistic Partner Henning Kraggerud.  His informal, storytelling approach has been winning over audiences across Ireland.

Instead of pausing between works, Kraggerud connects everything into one continuous flow, guiding listeners through the music in a way that feels natural and easy to follow. It’s a format that’s proving popular, especially for those who want to enjoy classical music without the usual formality.

The programme is based on familiar music, even if audiences don’t recognise the titles.  The calm of Satie’s Gymnopédie No. 1, the simplicity of Debussy’s The Girl with the Flaxen Hair, and the familiar elegance of Fauré’s Pavane. Heard live, and linked together, they land differently, more direct and personal.

There are deeper moments too. Massenet’s Méditation from Thaïs brings a strong emotional focus, while Beyond by Katherine Hunka offers a reflective homage to the orchestra’s former Principal Cellist, Christian Elliott.

The concert ends on a bright note with Ravel’s String Quartet in F major, performed in a version for string orchestra that oozes energy and colour. For many, the draw isn’t just the music, it’s how Kraggerud and the world-class Irish Chamber Orchestra present it. His style breaks down barriers, making concerts feel more engaging and more enjoyable for a wide audience.

French Reverie takes place on Friday June 19 at University Concert Hall. (Limerick Summer Proms).
