A special message from Tim Murphy, Munster GAA Chairman, ahead of Sunday’s Munster Final clash.
THE Munster Senior Hurling Championship remains one of the greatest sporting competitions in Ireland, and in my view second only to the All-Ireland hurling and football finals.
Few championships in any code can match the intensity, passion, and sustained interest that Munster hurling generates.
Since the introduction of the round robin format in 2018, the championship has gone from strength to strength, both in terms of hurling quality and the remarkable levels of support it continues to attract.
Just two weeks ago, attendances across Munster Championship games passed the milestone of two million spectators since the format was introduced, a remarkable achievement and a clear reflection of the unique place this competition holds in the sporting life of not only the province but the entire country.
Recent meetings between the teams add further intrigue to this year’s final. Last year’s Munster Final saw Cork emerge victorious after a dramatic encounter that went to extra-time and ultimately penalties.
Earlier this year, Limerick claimed the National League Final with a strong performance against the same opposition. These contrasting outcomes highlight the fine margins that exist and set the scene for what promises to be another compelling contest.
Both teams have demonstrated outstanding consistency and quality, and they deserve great credit for reaching the provincial decider. They continue to uphold and advance the high standards that have become synonymous with Munster hurling.
On behalf of Munster GAA, I extend our best wishes to both counties, their respective management teams and supporters. I have no doubt that the occasion will live up to expectations and provide another memorable chapter in the proud and storied history of this great championship.
Beir bua is beannacht!
Tadhg Ó Murchú,
Cathaoirleach, Comhairle na Mumhan.
