Labour party leader wants health minister to resign

LABOUR Party leader Eamon Gilmore has claimed the Minister for Health Mary Harney is not committed to the public health service.
He called for her resignation and described the policy by the HSE to centralise accident and emergency services in the Mid West as “bad for the region”.

Mr Gilmore was speaking at the launch of Labour candidate Senator Alan Kelly’s European election campaign.

The HSE is due to transfer round-the-clock A&E services from Ennis and Nenagh to the Mid Western Regional Hospital in Limerick from Monday.

The Labour candidate who is public relations officer of the Nenagh Hospital Action Group said there was a complete lack of clarity on what would happen on Monday.

Unions have said they will not co-operate with any changes to their work practices claiming the move will have serious health and safety issues for patients and staff.

Talks are due to get under way at the Labour Relations Commission today between the HSE and health service unions.
