City parades promises colour and fun

THE city will come alive today when two of the biggest and most colourful parades of the year are held. The organisers have also ensured the parades won’t clash.

Laura Ryan of Limerick Co-ordination office, explained: “The car-free parade will begin at 1pm, and although people will gather to take part in Limerick Pride at 1pm, that parade won’t start until 2pm. The car-free parade will begin at Merchant’s Quay, and travel to the Treaty Stone, via King John’s Castle. Mayor of Limerick, Cllr Kevin Kiely, has encouraged families to come out for the event.

“This is a great day out for the family; a chance to have fun, enjoy some great entertainment and to showcase the city’s recently remodelled riverscape”. Limerick’s Pride parade will start in Pery Square at 2pm today and travel down Henry Street, turning at Sarsfield Street and back to O’Connell Street.

Dozens of fun fringe activities will take place around both parades. The Post-Pride block party will involve music food and dance, street performers, a barbecue and a dog show. Michelle Costello, Limerick Pride PRO, said: “It’s wonderful to have the support for this festival from the City Council, outside of Dublin, we are the only city t do this. It makes a massive impact on the community to know how much support is out there”.
