Uninsured driver jailed and banned for 20 years

A 19-year-old man has been banned for driving for a period of 20 years by Judge Aeneas McCarthy after being convicted for the 13th time for driving without insurance.

Brian Curtin, 16 Crecora Avenue, Ballinacurra Weston, currently serving a sentence for other road traffic offences, was brought to court on foot of a warrant relating to charges from May 27 last.

Garda Enda Coughlan gave evidence of stopping the accused at 5pm on the evening in question in O’Malley Park area of Limerick driving a 94 WX registered car.

The garda requested the accused to submit his details to a garda station of his choice, but he failed to do so.

The court heard that Curtin was driving the car without a driving licence, insurance, tax or a valid NCT certificate.

Garda Coughlan gave details of a number of previous convictions, including 12 for no insurance.

Sarah Ryan, solicitor, requested the current release date of October 15, 2010 for her client, not be added to.

Judge McCarthy convicted and sentenced the accused to six months in prison for having no insurance, and banned him from driving for 20 years.

The other road traffic matters were taken into consideration and Curtin was returned to Limerick Prison.
