Love Haiti festival action

PERFORMING artists in the Mid-West galvanise on Sunday February 21 to create three stages of live music, playing from 3pm under a ‘Love Haiti’ banner. Bentley’s and The Brazen Head are the joint centres for this fundraiser, Jon Kenny and Mike Finn the luminaries who lead by commitment and talent.

Other than a lengthy panel of musicians, all the family can look forward to a fire breather, magic show, balloon artistry, DJ decks and the option of food, a barbecue, too and of course, drink.

Who is who for this effort, channelled to Haiti through Irish Red Cross? Brad Pitt Light Orchestra, The Varadys, The O’Malleys, Walter Mitty & The Realists, Downtown Dixieland Jazz, Joe Brown & the Durty Dawgs and The Funk Junkies. DJs number Tom Fitz, Paul Tarpey, Phil Wade, Tokin White Boy, Dan Sykes and Ms Skull. Nick Carswell and musicians from Limerick Jazz workshops join those who play variously in Bentley’s, Isaac Taylor’s, The Courtyard and The Brazen Head.

Irish farmhouse interiors, 19thC
UL has established an annual commemorative lecture series in memory of the late Mairead Dunleavy, former director of Hunt Museum. We’re told, “This initiative focuses on her life, career and legacy through thought-provoking and stimulating lectures and debates in fields of endeavour related to Mairead’s specialisms”.

The inaugural lecture has a theme that will delight many – Through Artists’ Eyes: Irish Farmhouse Interiors and Costumes as depicted in 19thC Paintings.

Dr Claudia Kinmoth PhD takes us through the workmanship, styles, origin and purposes of the materials and making concerned. Attend to Foundation Building’s lecture theatre FG-042 at UL on Wednesday February 24 at 7pm.
There is a reception afterwards. Reserve a seat of Dr Kinmoth’s talk by emailing ann.doyle@ul.ie. Her book, Irish Country Furniture 1700-1950, was published by Yale University Press and won her two awards. This was followed up by the doctor’s Irish Rural Interiors in Art.
