O’Dea steps down

‘I have made a bad mistake, I’ve paid heavily for it, I am sorry, I am contrite, I’ve apologised, I apologised again … I don’t know what else I can do.’

After a dramatic day of political speculation , Minister of Defence Willie O Dea has resigned his post, this evening , just before 9.00pm

In a letter, the minister said he had come to the conclusion that his continuing in office would distract from the important and vital work of the Government.

The Taoiseach, Brian Cowen will assume responsibility for the Department of Defence.
