Threat to future of St Paul’s Nursing Home

A DOORADOYLE nursing home with up to 70 patients will close in November if funds are not secured to bring the premises up to standards as regulated by a State agency.

St. Paul’s Nursing Home on St. Nessan’s Road, in existence since the 1960’s, will close if up to €3 million is not secured to refurbish the building. “The HIQA has looked for works to be carried out that will cost €2 to €3 million”, Cllr Richard Butler, who lives in the area, told the Limerick Post.

“There are many rules and regulations outlined by the agency. For example, all rooms are required to be converted into en-suites, even though many of the residents don’t use the toilet. They are in their 80’s and 90’s and use commodes.

“There is only one nun left at the Home, Sr. Catherine Casey, who is the manager, and about 50 other staff, with around 70 residents. There is no money for these refurbishments”.

Cllr Butler, who is Cathaoirleach of the County Council and visited the Home last weekend, said he would do “everything in my power” to ensure it does not close.

He said he has spoken to his contacts in the business world in attempt to secure finance.

“I have spoken to some of my contacts in business, directors of companies, and we have met with the board of trustees and Sr. Catherine this weekend to discuss what possible measures could be taken to keep the premises open”.
