Doon and Shanagolden garda stations to close

BOTH Doon and Shanagolden Garda Stations in are among 31 in the country to close next year. There had been fears around the county earlier in the year that as many as eight stations would close as part of cost saving measures introduced by Justice Minister Alan Shatter. However, along with the two stations to close in 2012, there are fears for other Limerick garda stations as the hours of 10 around the country are to be reduced.

Doon and Shanagolden Garda Stations are to close as part of cost saving measures implemented by Justice Minister Alan Shatter.
Ten other stations will have their opening times reduced.
Doon native Kevin Fitzgerald, said it was a sad day for the village. “Over the decades we were well served by those stationed here. There has been an amont of crime in the general area in recent times and a garda presence will be sorely missed”.
Speaking at Garda Headquarters, Garda Commissioner Martin Callinan, said: “Like every other part of the public service, An Garda Síochána has had to take a detailed look at how we do our business in order to find savings within a reduced budget and in order to provide a policing service with greater efficiency.
“All divisional officers were asked to assess the levels of activity in each station in their area.
“Arising from that, 31 garda stations across the country will close and a further eight, which are currently non-operational, will be formally closed”.
