Contemporary art in ‘the neighbourhood’

A: Askeaton Arts

‘WELCOME to the neighbourhood’ at Askeaton is an annual fortnight in which artists attached to different countries, disciplines and media arrive in this west Limerick town and create. The annual curator is Michele Horrigan, an LSAD graduate and career artist herself whose working life takes her on overseas residencies and projects.

Arts page flags notice of ‘Welcome to the neighbourhood’ as the invitation is practical, not notional. Book your place on the annual free bus from Limerick City Gallery of Art, Pery Square on Saturday June 29 at 2.30pm by email askeatonarts@yahoo.ie for arrival to “a reception we usually hold outdoors, with a view of the castle and the river,” reports Horrigan. “There is a walking tour then of the five or six artists in residence here who have been making works in various sites since June 17 – an empty shop, the community hall, wherever”.

Art works in progress over the fortnight  are completed for the 29th.

“All are made on site ad there’s a wide range this year, visual and performance art”.

Two participants are Irish, Aaron Lawless of Faber Studios in Henry STreet, Limerick and Dublin’s Michelle Browne. The Norwegians Anders Kjellesvik and Andreas Siqueland work together as the unit alPotu; Marie Roux did a group exhibition in Mexico this year with Horrigan herself and Freek Wambacq is based in Berlin.

The tour for the community finishes around 6pm with another reception for discourse and interaction at Askeaton Tourist Office, and the bus will return you to town unless you stay for the end-of-all Hellfire Club party, reputed to be the bohemian shindig of the year.
