World’s biggest tag rugby festival kicks off in Limerick

Tag Rugby Pig 'n' PorterTEAMS from Ireland, Britain and Australia will line out for the 2014 Pig’N’Porter Festival — hailed as the world’s largest tag rugby festival — in Limerick from July 10 to 12.

One of the Mid-West’s biggest summer events, it will see 150 teams, 2,500 players and 5,000 visitors descend on Ireland’s City of Culture for the weekend. Hosted on the grounds of Old Crescent RFC, the 13th annual festival combines sport, food and live music in the country’s rugby capital.

This year’s event has been expanded to include the International Tri Nations Cup between Ireland, Great Britain and the touring Australian tag teams.

The festival gets underway on Thursday, July 10 when the Australian teams take on the Limerick regional teams winners from the recently held National Tag Rugby blitz. On Friday, July 11 teams from Australia, Great Britain and Ireland will compete in the International Series.

“For the first time ever, our Saturday competition has been sold out with the largest ever number of teams in the festival’s 13-year history playing in the various sections of the competition,”said event organizer Eugene O’Riordan.
