Limerick Colour Dash makes a mess for cancer charity

pr86516_[1]_IMG_1050MORE than 400 messy participants got covered from head to toe in powder paint at UL last weekend to raise money for the Irish Cancer Society (ICS).

The charity’s Colour Dash made its debut appearance in Limerick and the third level campus was transformed into a multicoloured mess, all in the name of charity.

Participants were sprayed at each kilometre interval of the 5km route in different colour powder paint, with each colour representing a specific type of cancer.

Brendan Finucane (22) from Caherdavin was among those who took part, along with members of his family, and the ICS is a cause that is hugely significant for him.

He explained: “My mother was diagnosed with breast cancer last year and she went for her treatment. That brought home to us how scary it can be and it motivated us to do something for the ICS. It’s a fantastic cause and this was a great way to raise money.”

Brendan was accompanied by his father Fergus, sister Laura and brother Daragh on the Colour Dash and the Finucane family has already raised around €850 for the ICS, with the hope of further fundraising to come.

Brendan admitted that he was not fully sure what to expect from the Colour Dash before completing the 5km run, but he gave it a firm thumbs up afterwards and was undoubtedly thrilled with the experience.

“I didn’t really know what to expect from it beforehand. I didn’t know if it was actual paint or just powder that would be thrown at us, but we all had a fantastic time.

“It was a brilliant day. Everyone was in a great mood and was happy to be there. It was a bit of a shock when the paint was thrown at us but once we got the first bit we just wanted more.

“We all wanted to be destroyed and there was even people stopping off and going up to the volunteers asking to be covered in paint! It was fantastic.”

The next ICS Colour Dash takes place in Cork on Saturday September 6. Anyone wishing to take part can register online at www.cancer.ie
