Prima Volta, the name was conjured up by the ever creative John Lillis, AKA DJ/ producer mynameisj0hn. In a piece of music, a part performed prima volta is a part performed one time and one time only. Limerick’s Prima Volta Music Festival this weekend October 3 to 5 is also a one time chance to see some of the most creative new producers, performers, labels and DJs from the UK, US and beyond perform together over one weekend in the same city. Organiser Peter Curtin helped Limerick Post with their many enquiries this week.
The festival will feature live performances, DJ sets and film screenings with a chance to meet the acts at a lunchtime get-together on Saturday. Peter Curtin explains,
“There is something there for everyone, if you like dance, definitely the Friday night will be your cup of tea with DJs, producers and an MC, so there will be a live element to it also. Saturday night’s show is with the Eglo Records Live Band with headliner Fatima, whicch could be described as a jazz group. The DJs on the night will be playing all kinds of music. It’s a dream lineup to have, couldn’t ask for better. In the space of three days you can see a variety of acts that have been playing all the major festivals – lot of these acts played together at Dimensions Festival in Croatia. There were great reports about them from there.”

Friday (Stray)
PRIMA Volta have invited the groundbreaking Hoya:Hoya club night, one of the most prestigious club-nights in Europe to Limerick, hosts to some of the most innovative DJs and producers around. Along with regular Hoya:Hoya DJs including Jonny Dub, Ninja Tune’s Illum Sphere and Jon K, the night will feature Stray, a rising star of the electronic scene.
Stray is championed by tastemakers D-Bridge and Giles Peterson, the London based producer came through the drum & bass scene in 2009. His recent ‘Matchsticks’ EP and ‘Chatterbox’ EP on Exit Records showcase his soulful and melodic beat excursions. Hoya:Hoya happens in Dolan’s this Friday 3.
Saturday (Film Premier)
the Limerick Theatre and Performance Hub (on Cecil Street) will screen the Irish premier of the LA’s Low End Theory documentary, entitled ‘Looking For The Perfect Beat’ at 6pm. An intimate documentary of artists such as Gaslamp Killer, Ras G and Flying Lotus in their studios, it was filmed throughout the summer of 2013. There will be a Q&A with the film’s producer Low and End Theory founder Daddy Kev after the screening.
Saturday Night
(Eglo Records)
LONDON’S Eglo Records takeover Dolan’s and bring their artist roster covering everything from soul, jazz, disco to house. Headline act Fatima will perform with the Eglo Live Band along with DJs Alexander Nut, DJ Kutmah and Daddy Kev.
Fatima is a Swedish born, UK based singer on Eglo Records the London-based record label founded by Alexander Nut and Floating Points. Her album ‘Yellow Memories’ was released earlier this year to massive critical acclaim and has been lauded as one of the finest and most forward thinking records of 2014. Eglo Records takeover happens at Dolan’s this Saturday October 4.
Sunday (Wrap Party)
SUNDAY 5 is a more relaxed affair at Mickey Martin’s laneway. Headlining on the big soundsystem is all-round music lover LeFtO from Brussels. LeFtO’s music is firmly rooted in jazz and hip hop. His passion for jazz resulted in a remix album for Blue Note and a mix for the Ninja Tune Solid Steel series.
Alongside the headliners will be performances from local DJs, this passionately curated festival should see all music lovers find their perfect boom bap beat. Peter has the final word, “The acts know each other well and the music will go together well. It is a thought out lineup of 10 acts that will flow from the Friday night to the closing wrap party.”
The Prima Volta Music Festival runs from Friday 3 to Sunday 5 in Dolan’s and Mickey Martin’s Bar.
