various fine pix 004RESIDENTS in New Road, Thomondgate, are calling on Limerick city and county council to come up with a solution “once and for all” in dealing with fly-tipping at Donnellan’s Field on the banks of the River Shannon.

Patrick Murphy from Thomondgate contacted the Limerick Post this week to express his dismay at what has been an issue at the well-known city beauty spot for many years.

He now wants to see the Council and local residents to join forces and come up with a solution that will finally put this ongoing problem to rest.

“In fairness to the Counci,l they are stretched as it is but when you call them they will come and clean up the rubbish that has been dumped. The problem is within a couple of days it will be piled high again and we’re back at square one again,” Pat claimed.

“Donnellan’s Field is classified as a nature reserve and its full of wildlife. I walk here every day and it is beautiful. It’s awful that people come and dump their rubbish here. You’d see everything from household rubbish, mattresses, televisions, and all kinds of stuff thrown here,” he added.

Residents say that the lack of lighting in the area makes it a prime location for fly-tipping. They now want the Council to take serious measures to keep this area free of illegal dumping and suggest lights on New Road would be one useful deterrent.

“They drive down here at night and even though there’s a major CCTV camera system in place no one can see what is going on over there. It’s a disgrace. If there was more lights it would make it harder for them to dump without being seen. It’s about time the residents and Council pulled together to deal with this,” Mr Murphy concluded.
