Basketball Ireland: National Cup Round-Up

11970107052011021056Dublin Inter crashed out of the chase for the National Cup despite a narrow victory over UL Eagles on Saturday night. Trailing by five points from the first leg last year’s finalists managed to record a 73-71 victory over their visitors but it wasn’t enough as Eagles progress to the next round on aggregate.

Joining them in the next stage are Travelodge Swords Thunder who managed to overturn a first leg deficit against Belfast Star in a pulsating clash on Saturday. Ten points in arrears from the opening game, Thunder fell further behind in the first quarter and were still behind on aggregate by the interval but they roared into the lead in the third quarter and hung on from there. Coach Dave Baker was pleased to see his side book their place in the next round. “In the third quarter I think we kept them to seven points and that put us into some measure of security although they came back again. But that is Star, they are well drilled, well coached and have some very good players,”he said.

Cup holders C&S UCC Demons saw off Killester by ten points in their tie to add to their first leg victory, while Templeogue had a sixteen point aggregate triumph over DCU Saints to keep their hopes on track.

Rounding out the first round ties UCD Marian recorded a double over BFG Neptune, an 88-91 away win for the Dublin side giving them a twenty-one point difference over the two legs.

In the Womens National Cup Singleton SuperValu Brunell shocked the previously unbeaten Team Montenotte Hotel to record an impressive 74-59 win but it was not enough to deny their Cork rivals a semi-final place. Montenotte’s win in the first leg means that they survived to take the tie on aggregate, 140-129. “I’m absolutely thrilled with the performance from the girls tonight. Unfortunately we had a mountain to climb from the first leg, but I asked the girls to go out there and represent themselves and that is exactly what they did,”  Brunell coach Kieran O’Leary said.

DCU Mercy confirmed their place in the last four, cruising to a 170-105 aggregate victory over Meteors while Killester produced a superb second half comeback to knock out Courtyard Liffey Celtics in their second leg clash after the first game had ended in a stalemate. Killester eventually took the game by seventeen points.

Meanwhile Maxol WIT Wildcats and UL Huskies served up a thrilling battle but unfortunately for the Waterford women their two point win was not enough to overturn their first leg defeat and Huskies hung on to run out 126-120 winners on aggregate.
