Basketball Ireland: National League Recap

C&S UCC Demons are nine points clear at the top of the Men’s Premier League thanks to a 101-81 win over Templeogue at the Mardyke Arena. Colin O’Reilly’s side are now 10-0 in the league with the player coach netting 26 points in the first three quarters of yesterday’s win.

 

UCD Marian had two wins in 24 hours to move up three places with wins at home to DCU Saints and on the road at UL Eagles.

 

DCU Saints were the first to fall on an 88-54 score line – Marian led 25-17 heading into the second frame when Preston Ross slammed open the scoring and followed up with a couple of successful drives. UCD were 25 points clear by half time, allowing them to conserve energy ahead of the trip to Limerick.

 

It was a tightly contested affair at the UL Arena but UCD Marian had the only run of the game and pulled clear in the third quarter. Dan James hit 6/9 three pointers and his free throw denied Eagles a losing bonus point with the last shot of the game.

 

BFG Neptune’s bid to climb back up the table fell apart in the second half as they lost 83-68 to Travelodge Swords Thunder at the ALSAA. Ger Noonan’s side were 13 points clear at half time after a blistering second quarter where they outscored Swords by 18 points.

 

The trend reversed after the break as Swords upped their intensity, moved the ball and used their size. Swingman Michael Goj was once again the chief marksman and finished the game with a season high 26 points while Michael Bonaparte broke the 20 point mark for the first time since October for the visitors. Neptune managed just 19 points in the second half.

 

League champions Killester put up their biggest score since mid-October to deny Dublin Inter a losing bonus point at the IWA.

 

Inter used their perimeter shooting ability to take an early lead and it was almost half time before the home side gained an edge. Jermaine Turner was the fulcrum of Killester’s attack and had 16 points in the first half. Killester upped the pace from the start of the second half but struggled to shake off the Dublin Inter challenge and it took good work from Niall Hegarty get the margin beyond six points.
