IN PREPARATION for its December 5 concert of the Hallelujah Chorus, Limerick Choral Union is looking for new recruits to swell its 51 year-old ranks. New members will share the Christmas concert hall stage with soloists Jean Wallace (soprano), Martha Bredin (Alto), Patrick Hyland (tenor) and John Molloy (bass), accompanied by the LCU Symphony Orchestra directed by Malcolm Green.

To this end, an open night will take place next Tuesday September 8, 8pm at Christchurch, 51 O’Connell Street and rehearsals take place on Wednesday nights, same venue thereafter.

Previous choral experience is not essential and new members will be partnered with an existing member to assist and help them get started; line CDs are another tool used.

The coming season will work on Handel’s ‘Messiah’ and Beethoven’s ‘Missa Solemnis’ which will feature in a 1916 commemoration concert on May 8 next year.

According to their welcoming PRO Lorraine McMahon, “LCU is a progressive choir, always learning new repertoire, singing in many languages – Irish, French, German, Italian, Latin, and Russian – and challenging both members and audiences to more complex and demanding choral works”.
