A second man of similar age was removed to University Hospital Limerick.

Both men were traveling in the same car when it left the road and struck a ditch, a Garda spokesman said.

The road remains closed and Garda forensic collision investigators have begun an examination of the crash site.

Separately, four people were hospitalised after a two car collision near Bruff at 2:15am.

Their injuries are not believed to be life threatening.

Limerick city fire and rescue and emergency paramedics attended both accidents.

Investigations are continuing into both incidents.
