Savoy expansion gets green light

A MAJOR expansion of the Savoy hotel has been given the go-ahead after An Bord Pleanala cleared the way for a massive multi-million euro expansion that will create up to 75 jobs.

Last week, the proposed development received the green light after an objection to the expansion by An Taisce was rejected

The city centre hotel will now expand into the adjoining Mill building on Shannon Street as part of the development that will create both construction and hospitality jobs as part of the €8m scheme.

The proposal put before An Bord Pleanala would have seen the building rise to seven floors with 35 additional rooms but this has been reduced to six as a resulting condition of the project’s approval. 10 other conditions have also been assigned to the project.

Rudi Butler’s Kirkland Investments will renovate and convert the Mill building to accommodate the expansion of the Savoy Hotel complex which will also see the addition of a cafe and restaurant to the development.

A new entrance to the Savoy is also planned for Shannon Street where a connection between the Henry Street hotel and the Mill building will also be constructed.
