GARDAÍ have arrested a man in connection with a road traffic collision in which a young man was critically injured when he was struck by a car that had been pursued by gardai in Limerick city last Monday night.
A man, who gardai suspect was driving the car at the time, has been arrested.

A second male has been “spoken to” by investigating gardai, but they have not been arrested, an informed source said.

The silver BMW initially came to the attention of gardai at the Roxboro Roundabout on the south of the city, and was then pursued by gardai along Childers Road, towards the Crescent Shopping Centre, shortly before the collision, which occurred at Ballinacurra Road.

Two males who were travelling in the car fled from the car on foot, the Garda Siochana Ombudsman Office Commission said.

GSOC investigators were brought in to conduct an independent investigation into the circumstances surrounding the collision, as is part of normal procedure whenever members of An Garda Siochana are involved in an incident in which serious injury is suffered by a person or persons.

On Tuesday, a GSOC spokeswoman said: “GSOC received a referral (under section 102 of the Garda Síochána Act, 2005) following an incident in Limerick in which a person was seriously injured when he was struck by a car at around 11.30pm(Monday) night.”

“The two occupants of the car immediately fled the scene,” they said.

“A Garda Superintendent referred the matter to GSOC as there had been engagement between gardaí and the car a short time before the person was struck. The incident happened close to a roundabout at the Crescent Shopping Centre, approximately 5km from the city centre,” they added.

According to GSOC, the injured man “was on a scooter“ when he “was struck by the car at a pedestrian crossing”.

“GSOC investigators attended at the scene and the matter remains under examination.“

Today, a Garda spokesman said: “Gardaí have arrested a man in relation to a serious road traffic collision involving a pedestrian and a car that occurred on the Ballinacurra Road, Co.Limerick on March 8, 2021.”

“The collision occurred at approximately 11.20pm. The pedestrian, a man aged in his 20s, still remains in a critical condition at University Hospital Limerick.”

“The driver of the car failed to remain at scene.”

“A man, aged in his 20s, was arrested this morning and is currently detained at Roxboro Road Garda Station under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act, 1984.”

“Gardaí are appealing for anyone who was in the Childers Road/Ballinacurra Road or in the vicinity of the Ballykeeffe roundabout near the Crescent Shopping Centre between 11.15pm and 11.30pm on Monday night, March 8 to contact them.”

“Gardaí are particularly appealing to any road users who may have camera footage to contact Roxboro Road Garda Station on 061-214340.“
