Delivery driver has lucky escape but cab is destroyed in collision with bridge

A delivery van driver bit off more than he could chew when his cab was torn apart when it was driven into the under-passage of a bridge in Limerick city, this morning.

The collision occurred on Honan’s Quay, beneath Sarsfield Bridge, around 9am.

A passer-by said: “The truck was just way too high to go under the bridge, it’s full of toilet paper and crisps; and the roof was completely ripped off.”

The 2012 Dublin-registered white coloured Ford’s cab was completely destroyed in the collision.

The under-passage has a 2.5m height restriction for vehicles.

There are “caution signs” and a yellow warning sign attached to the bridge notifying traffic of the height restriction.

The under-passage was blocked for a period this morning but is now cleared.

The damaged white van was removed from the scene of the collision on the back of a tow-truck.
