Johnson & Johnson planning major expansion of Limerick base

The existing Johnson & Johnson manufacturing base in Plassey

JOHNSON & Johnson Vision Care (Ireland) is seeking planning permission to extend its manufacturing presence in Limerick.

Located at the National Technology Park in Plassey, the company is seeking to amend a previously approved plan from 2018 to extend its existing manufacturing building.

The plan includes an increase in area from 5,005 sqm to 6,559 sqm of the approved extension to the main building. The changes include an increase in roof height to 23.85m, extra loading bays, an additional electrical room and control rooms.

Now in its 26th year in operation, the Plassey plant has grown into one of the largest contact lens manufacturing facilities in the world, with a workforce of 1,600.

Planners at Limerick City and County Council are due to issue their decision by mid-June.
