LIDL Ireland has lodged a planning application with Limerick City and County Council for a new store at Towlerton, Ballysimon as part of a wider development which includes a cafe, commercial units, office space and 38 residential apartments.

The mixed use development proposed by Limerick-based Kirkland Investments will be located next to the Educate Together Secondary School, which is currently under construction, and adjacent to the site for the 150 bed Bons Secours Hospital which recently received planning permission.

The new Lidl store will expand the retailer’s Limerick portfolio to five stores with a sixth due to open on the Dock Road next April. 30 new jobs will be created at the Ballysimon store with up to 100 jobs  supported during the construction phase.

It will incorporate a range of sustainability features including a certified Energy Management System, electric vehicle charger spaces and a solar panel system.

Lidl Regional Property Director James Purcell said that Limerick was hugely important to the company as its Childers Road branch was one of its first stores to open in Ireland.
