Man charged in connection with Sailor’s Home blaze remanded until later this month

A LIMERICK MAN has been further remanded in custody to face charges in connection with a fire at the old Sailor’s Home, an historic building in Limerick City, in the early hours of Saturday morning (July 1).

Patrick O’Donovan (26), of Hyde Avenue, Ballinacurra Weston, previously appeared before a special district court sitting in Newcastle West this past Sunday (July 2).

Mr O’Donovan is facing charges of burglary with intent to cause criminal damage at the Sailors’ Home on O’Curry Street, Limerick City, on Saturday July 1.

The young local man is also accused of four criminal damage by fire incidents on vehicles in the O’Curry Street and Henry Street areas of the city on the same date.

When he appeared before Judge Carol Ann Coolican at the weekend, Inspector Vincent Brick, prosecuting, objected to bail on behalf of the State and Mr O’Donovan was remanded to Limerick prison to appear again on Tuesday July 4.

The 26-year-old accused man appeared before Judge Patricia Harney today (Tuesday) by video link from the prion to Limerick District Court, sitting in the Mulgrave Street court complex, and spoke only to acknowledge that he could see and hear proceedings and to confirm his name.

Judge Harney was told by the prosecution that directions in the case are awaited from the Director of Public Prosecutions.

The Judge remanded Mr O’Donovan in custody to appear again before the Limerick District Court on July 18 next.
