LIMERICK City and County Council have granted permission for a significant housing development in the city centre.

Permission has been granted for an eight-storey building with 21 apartments on Upper Mallow Street.

The application was applied for by Pairc na Daoine Limited, and will contain three studio apartments, 15 one-bedroom apartments, and three two-bed apartments.

Demolition of an existing building on James Street also forms part of the plans.

The new building will consist of a communal area in the basement, along with internal cycle storage, bin storage, and plant room.

City planners granted the permission subject to 21 conditions.

Conditions include that developers submit details for bicycle storage within the development to ensure that adequate number of storage spaces are provided, that nests for swifts and bats are provided to ensure the conservation of the species, and that measures to control the spread of the invasive Japanese knotweed plant in the area are followed correctly.

The Council also stipulated that the property on James Street that is to be demolished must have a Preservation by Record done, including drawings of the building as it stands, details about the construction of the building, and a full archival photographic study of the building be undertaken.
