A NUMBER of local heroes were bestowed with the highest honour available to the Municipal District of Cappamore Kilmallock last week.

In a special ceremony held at the Deebert House Hotel on December 7, elected members of the municipal district honoured local figures who had made outstanding contributions in their field – from sport to representing the area on the national stage – and help consolidate Cappamore Kilmallock’s place on the cultural map.

Among the list of honourees were the Cólaiste Iósaef Ladies soccer team, 2023 Rose of Tralee Róisín Wiley, and well-known athlete and former Kilmallock mayor PJ ‘Dasher’ Cronin.

Cathaoirleach of the Cappamore Killmallock Municipal District, Cllr Michael Donegan, emphasised the significance of the recognition, saying that the accolade “is the highest honour bestowed by the elected members of the Cappamore Kilmallock Municipal District”.

Mr Cronin was honoured for his lifelong commitment to athletics in Kilmallock, while principal of Scoil Pól, Mike O’Hara, was lauded for his contribution to the community through the school’s expansion and the establishment of a dedicated autism room and unit.

The 2023 Rose of Tralee, Roisín Wiley, was feted for her positive representation of the area on an international stage. The New York Rose’s parents hail from Kilmallock and Templeglantine and she was represented by her aunts Angela McCarthy and Meg Wiley on the night.
