HOUSEHOLDERS are being warned to be sure they are not unwittingly making it too easy for burglars to enter homes after a woman was left terrified when a thief was discovered in her bedroom.

The burglary took place in Thomondgate last week when the thief was able to shoulder in the front door of a house, Gardaí have said.

According to Garda reports, the lock was weak and gave in so easily that there wasn’t any damage done to the door.

Sergeant Ber Leetch, Crime Prevention Officer at Henry Street Garda Station, said that the female homeowner, aged in her early 50s, arrived at her Thomondgate home in the middle of the day and heard somebody upstairs.

The woman was frightened and ran to a neighbour’s house, at which point the neighbour entered her home and discovered a man in an bedroom upstairs.

The burglar fled the home and, when Gardaí arrived, the woman told them that her son’s Revolut card was missing.

The homeowner was able tell Gardai that her son’s card had been used in a nearby shop and, after an inspection of the shop’s camera, Gardaí had gotten a clear enough description of the suspect to begin a patrol of the area.

A short time later, the suspect was spotted by Gardaí and arrested. He is currently before the courts.

Sergeant Leetch warned of the importance of ensuring all doors and windows are locked, and that they are of good quality.
