LIMERICK City and County Council, in association with Limerick Chamber, launched a new voucher system to encourage shopping local this Christmas season.
The new Limerick Gift Card is set to launch before the holiday period in the city, as well as in Newcastle West, Adare, Abbeyfeale, Kilmallock, and Rathkeale.
The aim of the gift card is to increase footfall and spending in local businesses across Limerick, and was a key part of Mayor John Moran’s mayoral programme.
The Limerick Gift Card will be available as both a physical and digital gift card, and will provide a tangible investment into a number of sectors including retail, hospitality, leisure and services, benefiting both the day and night-time economy.
Limerick businesses are encouraged to take part in the programme, which offers a no-commission basis.
Newly appointed Limerick Chamber CEO Michelle Gallagher said that the Limerick Gift Card will support businesses as they will be able to keep 100 per cent of the value of the voucher.
“A key USP of the card is the commission free nature of it. Limerick businesses have experience of accepting the national cards that charge commission for every transaction. With the Limerick Gift Card, the business keeps 100 per cent of the transaction, at no additional cost to the purchaser,” the Chamber boss said.
“This is a gift card purely for Limerick which can be spent only with Limerick businesses, and that sets it apart from any other gift card.”
Mayor John Moran added that the initiative aims to invest in Limerick businesses and support people in shopping local.
He said his mayoral programme “set out the plan to improve and invigorate Limerick’s shopping districts. That is exactly what the Limerick Gift Card will do, giving people money to spend with Limerick businesses, in person, driving footfall.”
“I am calling on Limerick organisations to unite to develop the Limerick Gift Card,” he said.
