Silverware stories from Limerick

TG4 presenter Gráinne McElwain with Billy Aherne, Abbeyfeale, and the Fr William Casey Memorial Cup.

TG4’S captivating GAA documentary series Scéalta na gCorn will have a focus on Limerick tonight (Thursday May 8) from 8pm.

Presented by Gráinne McElwain, Scéalta na gCorn (Silverware Stories) brings viewers on a journey across the country to uncover the remarkable stories behind some of the most treasured trophies in Gaelic games.

From cups named after historic Irish patriots to more recent legends of the GAA, each episode offers a unique insight into the people and communities who have shaped the games we love.

In the current Series 3, Gráinne hits the road once again, meeting the families, friends, and club members who keep these stories alive. She explores the legacy of the names behind the silverware, and the deep pride felt by those who play for them.

In this week’s episode, Gráinne heads to Limerick to hear the story of Irish patriot John Daly, namesake of the Limerick Senior Hurling Cup.

At Mary Immaculate College, she meets those who remember Noreen Lynch, a much-loved lecturer and the inspiration for a ladies’ football trophy.

There’s also a lovely contribution from Billy Aherne, Abbeyfeale, on the Fr. William Casey Memorial Cup.

No trip to Limerick would be complete without a stop at Mick Mackey’s homeplace of Castleconnell (Ahane), celebrating the legendary hurler whose name graces the Munster Senior Hurling Cup, of which we are the current holders.

Earlier episodes focused on Armagh, Meath and Carlow, while future ones will look at Mayo and Derry.

Scéalta na gCorn – Sraith a Trí – is a truly heartwarming and inspiring celebration of local heroes, community spirit, and the legacy carried by GAA silverware across Ireland.
