FOLLOWING the seizure of a number of firearms during a planned Garda ‘day of action’ in Newcastle West last week, Gardaí have highlighted the requirement on gun owners to hold and renew firearm licences.
25 arrests were made on outstanding bench warrants during the Newcastle West sweep last week, and a number of firearms were seized.
Superintendent Mike Flemming said that while the operations was “significant, I want to stress that this is only one of a number of days which are planned”.
Gun licence holders are given three months’ notice before the lapse of licences, and Superintendent Flemming said “I am asking all licencees, who have received their renewal applications or renewal approvals, to comply with their obligations without delay”.
