A LIMERICK woman is among 14 Irish citizens that have been detained by Israel after joining a humanitarian flotilla.
Louise McCormack, former chairperson of Limerick Pride is one of the Global Sumud Flotilla activists, along with Dr Margaret Connolly, sister of President Catherine Connolly, who have been illegally detained by the Israeli government.
Media reports show video footage of a large group of activists being taunted by Israel’s national security minister which has been met with widespread condemnation.
It’s understood the group have since been deported and will fly to Turkey today (Thursday, May 21) before arriving back home in Ireland.
In a social media post, Limerick Pride group said: “We stand with Louise at Limerick Pride, former committee member, chairperson, friend, and tireless advocate for human rights, Louise, is one of the Irish participants currently detained by Israel after joining the humanitarian Flotilla.”
“We heard from Louise before she was detained, and they need all of us to help! Keep the pressure up, spread the word, and keep it in the media spotlight. We are devastated to hear reports of brutal treatment faced by Irish citizens peacefully acting in solidarity with Gaza. Lou went to deliver aid and bear witness. She should be safe, not behind bars”.
Earlier this month, Galway Live reported that the Limerick native, who was a final-year PhD researcher at University of Galway (NUIG) decided not to accept her doctoral degree while the university maintains research links involving Israeli institutions.
The government voted against a bill to impose sanctions on Israel in the Dáil this week. Limerick Pride is now calling for accountability following this decision.
They added: “While Lou and others are detained abroad for standing against injustice, politicians at home chose not to act. Limerick Pride has always stood for freedom, dignity, and the right to live without fear. That doesn’t stop at our borders. We call for the immediate release of Lou and all Irish participants detained, government accountability for refusing to sanction Israel, safety and protection for citizens engaged in peaceful humanitarian action.”
“Lou, we’re with you. Your Limerick family is raising our voices until you’re home safely”.
