The Best Free Newspaper and it’s official

THE Limerick Post Newspaper lifted the top prize of the Best Free Newspaper at the recent Mid West Arts Media and Culture Awards held at the Radisson SAS Hotel in Limerick last weekend.

With 11 nominations across a number of categories, the Limerick Post scooped the award ahead of competition titles from both Limerick and Clare.

 Accepting the award on behalf of the Limerick Post, company secretary and general manager, John Ryan, noted that it was, “very much a team effort” and was “delighted to pick up the award for the entire staff.”

This is the Limerick Post’s first year participating at the awards and with nominations in the categories of news, feature and best sports pieces, together with published nominations for photographic work by Press 22 and other photographers, the quality of the newspaper was evident in scooping the overall title of best free newspaper.

Master of ceremonies for the evening was RTE newscaster Eileen Whelan where she announced the nominations and winners for 36 awards on the night.

Following his honorary doctorate degree as given by the faculty at the University of Limerick just days before, The Richard Harris lifetime achievement award went to Limerick Civic Trust Director Dennis Leonard.

Mairtin O’Briain, assistant Government Press Secretary John Downing, Dave O’Connell, editor Connaught Tribune Group, Ciana Campbell, PR consultant and former RTE broadcaster, Pat O’Sullivan, local business man, and Bertha McCullagh, outreach education office for the arts made up the judging panel for the awards with Arts Minister Martin Cullen addressing proceedings prior to the awards as guest of honour.

Others to scoop awards at the event were, Limerick’s Live 95 FM, Clare FM, Limerick Leader, Limerick Independent, Business Limerick magazine, Limerick now magazine, as well as local representatives from the cultural arts and world of performance theatre.
