Early figures show that just fewer than 50 per cent of people voted in Limerick City while close on 62 per cent of people voted across county Limerick.
The sorting of votes is taking place at the UL arena and City Hall and signs are that of Limerick City Council’s 17 seats Fianna Fáil who had two seats could now be left with just one.
Fine Gael and Labour are both expected to gain seats.
Former Mayor John Cronin is likely to lose his seat in the North. The tally there shows FF on 11 %, FG on 39%, Labour on 14 %, Sinn Féin on 12 % and IND’s on 17%.
This shows a gain for Fine Gael of one seat and Sinn Féin gaining a seat for Maurice Quinlavan.
In the East of the city, Mayor John Gilligan is topping the poll at 44% while Fianna Fáil’s Kieran O’Hanlon is likely to be the only FF candidate in the next City Council. Labour’s Gerry McLoughlin will hold on to his seat in the East, while his daughter Orla will gain a seat for Labour in the South.
