THE count for Limerick City Council is completed and all seventeen members have been elected following a lengthy count at City Hall, which ran until after 6am this morning.
Topping the poll in Limerick City East, outgoing Mayor John Gilligan secured his seat after obtaining 972 first preference votes.
Councillor Kieran O’Hanlon retained his seat on the sixth count having polled 841 first preference votes. He is the now the only Fianna Fáil councillor in the new city council. Labour’s Gerry McLoughlin was elected on the 8th count while Fine Gael’s Denis McCarthy was elected without reaching the quota.
Cllr Joe Leddin topped the poll In Limerick City South, with 1,113 first preference votes. Fine Gael’s Maria Byrne secured 1,066 first preference votes ensuring both she and Leddin were elected on the first count. It was not until the eight count that former Mayor, Ger Fahy was elected.
Finally Pat Kennedy (IND), Orla McLoughlin (LAB), Diarmuid Scully (FG) and Jim Long (FG) were all elected on the 15th count without reaching a quota.
Michael Hourigan topped the poll In Limerick City North with 1,533 first preference votes, getting elected on the first count. Cormac Hurley having polled 1,014 first preference votes secured the second seat in the tenth count.
Labour’s Tom Shortt polling 824 first preference votes won the third seat after he was elected following the 13th count.
Kevin Kiely (FG), Maurice Quinlivan (SF) and Independent candidate, Kathleen Leddin were all elected without reaching a quota.
