Former Christian brother sent for trial on 110 indecent assault charges in late 70s

A 68-year-old former Christian Brother charged with indecent assault over a 12-month period dating back to the late 70s, has been sent forward for trial to the Circuit Court. The accused, who cannot be named for legal reasons, resides in north county Dublin and was represented by his solicitor, Robert Eagar of Garrett Sheehan and Partners.

The alleged indecent assault occurred in the Christian Brother School, Sexton Street, Limerick. between 1978 and ‘79.

 

Inspector Brendan McDonagh told the court that the DPP had consented to the accused being sent forward for trial to the higher court.

The man now faces 110 charges of alleged sexual assault relating to the period of time in question at Sexton Street CBS.

At an earlier sitting, Mr Eagar had argued that the alleged incidents were of an “historic nature,” and were first investigated in 2008. His client was arrested, questioned and released.

With the book of evidence now served, Judge O’Donnell sent the accused forward for trial to the next sittings of the Circuit Court and extended bail on the terms where he be resides in his north county Dublin address and on his own bond of €500.
Mr Eagar was assigned as legal aid and afforded one counsel for the trial.
