Woman rescued from River Shannon during emergency operation

A YOUNG woman was rescued from the River Shannon this Friday night after a she was seen entering the water near Bishop’s Quay behind Henry Street Garda Station.

Th alarm was raised shortly after 11;40pm and the emergency servies were scrambled to the scene.

Within minutes of the alert, swift water rescue swimmers from the Limerick City and County Fire and Rescue Service launched the new jet boat that is moored at Steamboat Quay.

The young woman was rescued from the water, down stream, near the Shannon Bridge and was brought ashore at slipway adjacent to St MIchael’s Rowing Club.

The entire operation lasted just over one hour from when the alert was raised and Emergency Paramedics from the Ambulance Service treated the woman at the scene.

Once her condition was made stable and having been initially treated for shock and effects of the bitterly cold water, the young woman was later brought to University Hospital Limerick for continued treatment.

Members of Limerick Marine Search and Rescue and Gardai were also at O’Callaghan’s Strand during the incident.
