Sailors home exhibition to honour Martin Folan

martin-folanSCULPTURES, paintings and furniture by former Limerick School of Art and Design tutor, Martin Folan have been brought together by his family and friends to celebrate the works of the highly regarded Irish talent.

Martin, who passed away last year, was a community, performance and public artist who put his creative energy into the spaces he occupied.

Educated at the National College of Art & Design and Limerick School of Art & Design, he was a highly rated tutor and a major influence on the development of a generation of Limerick art students. His solo shows included exhibitions at various art centres around the country.

A winner of the Guinness Peat Aviation Award and recipient of the first Irish/America Art Exchange Fellowship to PS1 Studios in New York, Martin was subsequently awarded fellowships by the Fine Arts Work Center in Provincetown and by the Massachusetts Council for the Arts and Humanities.

Put together by Mairead Byrne, Marina Byrne Folan, and artists Martin Shannon and James Ryan, the exhibition opens at the Sailors Home, O’Curry Street on Thursday, June 18 at 6.30pm and will run until July 4.
